Numerical modelling: The physical model for the simulation of the primary and secondary cosmic-ray particles is based on systems of general purpose Monte Carlo computer codes (e.g. LAHET, MCNP) that treat relevant physical processes of particle production and transport. The calculated production rates will be compared to measurements of the natural and artificial target networks as well as the cross-calibration sites. The comparison will enable us to adjust reaction cross sections for which good measurements do not exist.

Deliverables of the numerical modelling will be the unification of the target measurements into either general purpose scaling factors, or if required specific scaling factors for each TCN. The modelling will achieve the physics-based interpolation between the points of the scaling grid and the cross calibration sites. Model calculations similar to those outlined above have been published by participating network members and currently define the state of the art (e.g. Masarik and Beer 1999; Masarik et al. 2001).
